Tim Tennant

TIM S. TENNANT, PRESIDENT AND CEO.  Tim is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, Inc. Tim has 16 years of experience in the tourist railroad and railroad museum community. A native of Wisconsin, previous to joining the Friends Tim was Director of Development and prior to that General Manager at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay. Tim has many family ties to the railroad industry, as his father, grandfather, and an uncle all were locomotive engineers on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. Tim's wife Judy also is a twenty-year railroad veteran.

Tim holds a degree in Transportation and Distribution Management from Northeast Wisconsin Technical Institute in Green Bay. In addition to his passion for railroading, Tim's other interests include traveling, model railroading, Great Lakes Maritime history, and of course being a fan of the Green Bay Packers.

Craig McMullen

CRAIG MCMULLEN, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD.  Craig is a native of Colorado Springs. He attended college in Oklahoma, medical school in Denver, and spent six years in the army. He returned to Colorado Springs and practiced radiology at Penrose Hospital for 32 years. He was chief of staff for two years and on the Hospital Board for two years. After retirement Craig became involved as a Friends volunteer and has participated in a variety of Friends’ projects. He is a serious woodworker. His other hobbies include garden railroading, gardening, and various outdoor activities. Craig was elected chairman of the board in 2009.

Jim Herron

JAMES N. (“JIM”) HERRON.  Jim is an Illinois native who currently lives in Salt Lake City, where he is an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Utah. His professional duties include teaching and research. He has several ancestral ties to railroading including a grandfather who worked for Westinghouse, a great grandfather who was an agent for the Adams Express Company on the Pennsylvania Railroad daily varnish from Pittsburgh to New York City, and a great uncle who was a steward at the PRR locomotive shops in Pittsburgh. As a youngster, his father took him on a number of Illini Railroad Club excursions behind CB&Q steamers 4960 and 5632. Jim joined the Friends at its inception in 1988 and has participated in work sessions annually since then. Initially, he participated in maintenance-of-way projects including the relocation of the dual-gauge display track from Alamosa to Antonito and stabilization of the Cumbres snow shed, but has been the team leader for structure painting since 1994. His team has painted historic buildings at Chama, Cumbres and Sublette, and also the display engines at Antonito. Jim is active in the Friends organization, serving on the board of directors since 1993 and the projects committee since 1997. He was elected chairman of the board in 2002. He has also served as secretary (1995-1998, 1999-2001) and vice president (2001-2002). His major interest in the Friends is to insure that the railroad is preserved for future generations.

Linda Smith

LINDA SMITH.  Linda has been a member of the Friends since 1994. She is an independent management consultant, and lives in Logandale, Nevada (about an hour north of Las Vegas). Linda spent most of her career in the Federal government, primarily the Department of Energy. She retired in 1994 as the Deputy Manager of the Nevada Operations Office which was responsible for the nation’s nuclear weapons test program at the Nevada Test Site. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Nevada Las Vegas and a Master’s in Business Administration from Arizona State University. Linda is a founding Trustee of the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation which has responsibility for the Atomic Testing Museum, located in Las Vegas, and brings to the Friends her experience in both raising funds and building a museum from the ground up. She currently serves on two Friends committees: Grant-Writing and Railroad Visitor Center.

Nan Clark

NAN CLARK.  Nan was elected to the board of directors in 2003. She holds an M.A. in Educational Psychology from California State University, Northridge. She is a retired counselor and currently resides in Floresville, Texas with her husband Les. Nan is Vice President of Interpretation and Chama RVC Project.

Bob Craine

BOB CRAINE.  Originally from Great Bend, Kansas, Bob has lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma since 1975. He is co-owner and managing director of TSF Capital, LLC, a private investment and management consulting firm, and has been engaged in the venture capital and consulting business since 1997. Prior to 1997 Mr. Craine served as an executive officer and director of TSF Communications Corp., a publicly held investment holding/operating company primarily engaged in publishing, information services, trade shows and trade show services. Prior to working 13 years at TSF Communications Corp., Mr. Craine practiced corporate and securities law for 11 years. Bob holds a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Kansas and MBA and JD degrees from Southern Methodist University. Mr. Craine is an active volunteer and leader in a number of local and statewide economic and technology development organizations in Oklahoma, including presently serving (since 2002) as Chairman of the Board of the Oklahoma Technology Development Corp.; past Chairman and President of the Oklahoma Investment Forum; and past Chairman of the Oklahoma Capital Investment Board. Bob is a director of several private companies, and was the Founder, Publisher and Editor of Future Value Magazine, an Oklahoma economic development, venture capital and entrepreneurship publication. Mr. Craine is a life-long railfan. He has been interested in and followed the progress of the C&TS RR since the late 1980’s and has been a member of the Friends since 1999 and a director since 2000.

Bob served as chairman of the board from 2005 to 2009. He founded the the Another Century of Narrow Gauge Steam fundraising campaign. He currently serves as the chair of the Finance and is a member of the Executive Committees of the Friends’ Board.

Parker Fowler

F. PARKER FOWLER, JR.  Parker is a retired professor of computer science and lives in Longmont, Colorado. Parker holds a Ph.D. degree, University of California-Berkeley, in Operations Research and Mathematical Statistics (before Computer Science was invented). He taught probability and statistics, math and computer science at Colorado State University, University of New Mexico, and Colorado University, for some 25 years. He owned and operated several systems-oriented businesses, notably an early HMO data processing system. Since retiring he has developed computer-related parts of business for academic charter schools. He has a deep interest in steam power including steam tractors and other machinery. His love affair with the D&RGW began in 1948. He and his brother Hugh founded the Colorado Society for Preservation of the Narrow Gauge in 1969. He and wife Charly are charter members of the Friends.

David Lee

DAVID LEE.  David is the editor of the C&TS Dispatch. He has been active in a variety of Friends’ work sessions. He is an independent consultant working in manufacturing engineering and engineering education and training. He was the 2003 President of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He previously held research, engineering, and senior management positions primarily in the automotive industry. He was Director of the Manufacturing Engineering Program at the University of Detroit Mercy from 2000 to 2004.

Bill Lock

WILLIAM J. (“BILL”) LOCK.  Bill is an attorney in solo practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bill is past president and founder of the Friends of the C&TSRR, Inc. and was a member of the board of directors of the Historical Society of New Mexico, Inc. Bill majored in history as an undergraduate at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and has a law degree from Indiana University. In 1981 he started a new volunteer program on the C&TS and the following year was elected to the Historical Society of New Mexico board. From that position he launched the volunteers, initially under the auspices of the Historical Society Railroad Committee. In 1988 Bill incorporated the Friends. He has been active on the board, during work sessions, and many related activities.

Ed Lowrance

EDGAR G. LOWRANCE II.  Ed lives in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, having retired as owner of Alphagraphics Printshops of the Future in Pagosa Springs. He holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Antioch College. Ed was elected to the Friends board in 2003, and is Vice President of Projects.

Bob Ross

BOB ROSS.  Bob lives in Brentwood, Tennessee. He is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, Commissioned Officer U. S. Navy, and retired from 31 years with Union Carbide Corporation where he held various responsibilities including Vice President of Marketing. He first rode the D&RGW while serving as a camp counselor out of Thoreau, New Mexico in the l950’s and became fascinated with the history of slim rails in the mountains. Thirty-two years ago, he purchased a Conservation Bond from the Colorado Society for the Preservation of the Narrow Gauge, Inc. He is blessed with a tolerant wife who has spent many a "vacation" chasing steam trains and walking fabled grounds such as Rico, Red Mountain Town and pre-C&TS Chama. Four years ago, following his retirement, Bob and his wife began volunteering with the Friends. For the last four years he has served on the Advisory Board and acted as a volunteer tour guide for the Historic Carnton Plantation, a national historic site in Franklin, Tennessee, an important Civil War landmark. He believes much of our heritage and historic ground has disappeared due to development or neglect. And this is regrettable because it leads to the loss of the nation’s cultural horizon. Our 64-mile window on 1880's narrow gauge railroading must be preserved. He is committed to continue assisting in this effort. He is presently the Vice President of Development.

Warren Smalley

WARREN D. SMALLEY.  Warren lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico and is the retired President and CEO of a group of insurance companies, i,e., New Mexico Mutual Casualty Company and Foundation Reserve Insurance Company. Over the last four years he donated a week of vacation every year to work on the railroad. He helped to restore drop-side gondola cars, a gondola car to carry passengers, and the cosmetic restoration of rotary OY. He has supported various railroad museums around the country. He was re-elected to the board in June 2006 and is on leave of absence from the board, acting as interim President and CEO of the Friends while Tim Tennant is on leave of absence serving as general manager of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Management Company.

DENNIS S. STEROSKY.  Dennis lives in Albuquerque, NM and is a member of the firm of Pulakos & Alongi, Ltd., CPAs as well as a part-time tax instructor for Anderson Schools of Management at the University of New Mexico. His education includes BBA from the University of Notre Dame in 1962; LLB from Notre Dame Law School in 1965; and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) 1968. He has served on the board and as an officer of state and national professional groups and of Albuquerque non-profits. He has been a member of the Friends since 1991 and his firm has sponsored the printing of Moonlight Train brochures. He has been involved with trains for many years through his interest in history and collectible models. He is pleased to donate his time to preserving such an important historic site. He wants to help the next generation understand the railroad’s role in the history of this area and how it affected the lives of those who relied upon it

Carolyn Tower

CAROLINE TOWER.  has been active in the Friends for several years. She has worked as a volunteer for the Friends on several projects. She is a key participant on the Friends’ grant writing and development committees and has been directly responsible for the Friends receiving substantial grants. Prior to retiring, Caroline worked in private and non profit fund-raising. She was the founding director of the Foundation Center-San Francisco Office. Following that she spent twenty years as the President and CEO of the Northern California Grant Makers. She now works as a volunteer fund raiser for organizations specializing in delinquency prevention, such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Spencer Wilson

SPENCER WILSON.  Spencer lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico and is a Professor Emeritus (History) from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Socorro, New Mexico. His interests in history range from the Civil War to industrial history, especially as applied to railroads, and to the history of New Mexico. He grew up in Albuquerque in those years when the Santa Fe shops were the principal employers in town. Travel on the railroad in both east and west prompted a lifelong interest. Spencer’s position on the Historical Preservation Committee of New Mexico led him to the C&TSRR and to co-author the historical preservation study. He has published numerous articles and made many presentations on the C&TSRR. He is the past-president of the Historical Society of New Mexico and a former member of the C&TSRR Commission, the bi-state agency (Colorado and New Mexico) which oversees the Railroad.
